Jan and Mike Pollard’s Woodinville kitchen before renovation. |
THE CHALLENGE: The kitchen in Jan and Mike Pollard’s Woodinville home was drab and boring. Part of a 1986 builder-stock home, it didn’t fit their love of entertaining or reflect their creative, fun-loving personalities. After 10 years, they needed more space for guests and wanted to freshen outdated cabinetry and appliances.
THE SOLUTION: Interior designer, and member of the
Color Marketing Group, Cathy Neidermeyer helped shape an efficient and inviting entertaining area. “They wanted to bring out the best in [their home],” she says. An original wall was knocked out and 580 square feet added, so the kitchen could embrace gatherings. A central granite island replaced an old kitchen table. “The granite island created a more efficient work triangle and a gathering space,” Neidermeyer says.
A new corner window with a view brought in light, and the kitchen’s appeal was enhanced by warm paint colors and cherry cabinetry. Finishing touches, such as ceramic planters and glass urns, were the perfect place to incorporate the Pollards’ eclectic style. “The family members’ involvement in accessory choices brought their personalities together,” Neidermeyer says. Now the space is inviting, interesting and ready for entertaining.
Subtly curved pendant lights offset the angles in the rest of the kitchen. The backsplash, custom designed by Neidermeyer and Jan Pollard and installed by Mike Pollard, creates a focal point under the range hood and visually unifies the room. Stained-glass inserts in the cupboards were designed by the Pollards’ son and incorporate another family member’s personality into the design. |
